Drill holes for air vents
| Insert Screens
| Drill hole for drain fitting
 | Use a 2” circle bit to drill the two holes for the screened aeration vents. Keep bin lid secure to prevent spinning. Make sure surface under hole area is protected so it will not be damaged while drilling. | Install the screened vents into the lid top and bend tabs to hold them securely in position. | Use a 5/8” flat paddle bit with wings to drill the drain fitting hole. Hole should be at least 1/2” from the bottom of the bin, preferably in a spot where the side wall is flat so the fitting will have a tight seal. | Install Drain Fitting

| Place Stones or Gravel in Bin | Install Plastic Mesh
| | Screw the drain fitting through the hole. Place a little caulk or sealant around fitting before completely tightening it to insure a leak proof seal. Nut can placed from the inside and hand tightened. | Place 1-2” of gravel, small stones or pieces of wood (2” x 2”) inside the bin to act as the liquid catchment area. Wood should run length of bin versus across. | Lay the mesh matrix with fine mesh to the top, on top of gravel or wood strips. The landscape fabric then lies on top of the mesh. This keeps the bedding from infiltrating the mesh and drain area. |
"InsertKit" Installation Instruction Sheet Developed & Manufactured by Beaver River Associates
The enclosed kit has screens which will accommodate most common 18 Gallon Plastic Storage bins. For smaller units such as Rubbermaid™ Rough Neck Totes, the screens can be trimmed with a good pair of scissors, shears or utility knife.
Bins are made with various types of plastic. Colder plastic is more brittle. Choose a warm location to do your work.
Tools Needed:Electric drill, 5/8” paddle bit, 2” circle bit, small amount of bathtub or silicone caulk sealer.
Step 1- Install Drain fitting• Drill a 5/8” hole about ½” of the base of the bin at either end (centered). • Apply a small amount of caulk or sealer around perimeter of drilled hole. • Remove nut from back of drain fitting and insert through hole. Place nut on threaded piece, twist until secure. Caulk or sealer will prevent any leaking.
Step 2- Insert Screens• Trim screens down to size if needed. • Place approximately 1” of gravel or small stone across inside base of bin. • Place screens in position with finer mesh on top. • Place landscape cloth on top of screens.
Step 3- Install Screened Air Vents • These are placed in the top center area of the lid. • Mark hole locations and place a piece of wood under the lid so when you drill through you will not damage the work surface below, or place lid on container and drill carefully. • Put vents in and bend back the tabs underneath to hold the vents in place
Step 4- Place Bedding in container. Use at least 8”-10” of bedding.
Step 5- Place worms in bin. Leave a light on over the bin for at least 24 hours. Worms do not like light and this will insure they stay in their new home. Place some compostable materials in the bin. This will give them a job they love to do. Refer to worm care and feeding sheet included with kit.
